Our Mandate The Mandate of the Whistler Museum and Archives Society (WMAS) is to develop and maintain a museum and archives of which Whistler, as a community, can be proud. The WMAS fosters the preservation and appreciation of the natural setting, and the material heritage (particularly year-round sports and recreation) accessible to both community members and guests. The museum collects, preserves, studies, and interprets the natural and human history of the region through entertaining and educational exhibitions and programs for the benefit of children, youth, families, and individuals.
What's in a name? Whistler Mountain was originally named London Mountain by British Naval Officers and Surveyors in the 1860's. Whistler Mountain was the common name from the early 1900's, but did not become the official name of the mountain until August 27, 1965. From the 1900's to 1975 the settlement near Whistler Mountain was called Alta Lake. The settlement of Alta Lake, BC became the Resort Municipality of Whistler on September 7, 1975.
