The Whistler Committee on Alcohol and Drug Prevention and Education received a $5000 grant from the Ministry of Children and Families to hire a Youth Outreach Worker for Whistler. Whistler provides many opportunities for young people to indulge in high risk behavior, while not offering the support systems - family; an established network of friends; trusted advisors - necessary to deal with the consequences.
In June Youth Outreach Worker France Vaudreuil was hired to establish herself with the youth of Whistler, to join them in the village, the skateboard bowl, the pubs and clubs and other local hangouts. She has become known as someone to whom they can speak in confidence, and someone with practical knowledge of local resources and the means to make use of them.
The Whistler Outreach Worker has helped young people deal with issues of employment, unemployment and poverty, conflict with the law, homesickness, alcohol and drug abuse and difficulties with interpersonal relationships.
